How to transform your house into a home

There’s no place like home! There’s no place like home! There’s no place like home! It’s where your family spends time together. It’s where you hang out with your friends. It’s where you go to relax. It’s where you feel most comfortable. It’s where you live!

When you move into a new house, a lot of those good feelings aren’t there, and you may have a hard time adjusting. There are many great ways to get that warm feeling back and truly transform your house into a HOME.

  1. Flooring – Many houses have either been updated or built with hardwood or laminate floors throughout the house. Although it’s easy to upkeep, it can make a space feel cold and uninviting. Without any carpets or a rug to absorb sound, steps can echo and make a room feel empty. Finding a way to incorporate textiles, like a throw rug or tapestry, can easily make a space feel cozier.
  2. Light fixtures – Lighting is one of the easiest ways to add a personal touch to your home. Changing and updating the lighting around your house, and adding table and floor lamps are fantastic personality indicators and instantly make a place feel more lived in. Where possible, you can consider adding dimmer lights for an extra touch.
  3. Display memories around the house – Whether framing your children’s artwork for the wall or displaying family photos on a side table, adding personal pieces around the house is a quick way to turn it into a home.
  4. Create an open feel – Even if you don’t have an open floor plan, arranging furniture strategically, and creating multi-use rooms will go a long to creating a home for a close-knit family.
  5. Adapt your home to your needs – Don’t need a formal dining room and a breakfast nook? Repurpose the dining room into an office or a playroom. It’s your house and there are absolutely no rules!
